Jason Castro and Matt Hires 'State Lines' Tour February 10, 8:51 PMPop Music ExaminerMarian Tuin Matt Hires performs 'A Perfect Day' at the Soiled Dove Underground in Denver on Feb. 9, 2010.
A Tuesday night show in the frigid air of the Mile High City in Colorado was not a deterrent for the loyal fans of Matt Hires and Jason Castro. The two Atlantic Records label mates rolled into town midway through Hires' State Lines 2010 tour across the nation. The combined forces of the former American Idol and charming songsmith from Tampa Florida was a showcase of acoustic mastery and earnest artistry.
Opening for Matt Hires, Jason Castro easily cast a warm glow in the dimly lit venue with his notable charismatic affability. The simple set was comprised of Castro and a supporting guitarist/vocalist backing him up. And he didn't need any more than that to fill the room with rich notes and layered melodies. The pureness of Castro's vocal ability and simple strumming was enough to evoke an emotional connection with his adoring audience. Halfway through the set he employed the use of his ukulele and performed a flawless cover of 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow'.
Jason's easy going personality and sense of humor was also on display while he was onstage. After performing "If I Were You" he noted a disclaimer in regards to the lyrics, "If I were you I would drop out of school, forget the grades you haven't made..." saying, "I'm not advocating you drop out of school if you're in high school. When you're in college you have options." Then before launching into his debut single "Let's Fall In Love Again" Castro primed the crowd for Matt Hires upcoming set by slyly smiling and saying, "He is probably backstage preparing his next great Scrabble move." alluding to the road weary rivalry between his tourmate and himself. Closing his set the same way he says his yet to be released album ends, he played an emotive rendition of the timeless song "Hallelujah". Jason clearly had the room captivated with the heartfelt performance. Using simplicity of instrumentation and raw talent he provoked the profound goodness music can effect on human emotion. He is truly a diamond in the music industry amidst many gems.
