The Great Bossier City/Barbecue Adventure
So this is how it went down, my fellow Jason fans.
Last week in Oklahoma City, I mentioned to Jason that I was coming to Bossier City the next Friday and if he wanted, I would bring him some of his favorite sandwiches from his favorite BBQ place which JUST HAPPENS to be in Tyler. Well, he thought that was a verrrry good idea and asked me if I could bring THREE of them. No problem, I say, and he says he'll tweet me later.
Well, Friday comes and he hasn't tweeted, but I go ahead and purchase the three Brother-in-law sandwiches. That's the name they give them. They have chopped brisket, grilled hot links and cheese on a jalapeƱo bun and Jason really LOVES them. So I order three of those and get me the one called "the ex-wife" which is a combo of brisket and pulled pork. And with all this good food (plus napkins and barbecue sauce) I hit the road for Bossier City.
About 90 minutes later, I'm pulling into the venue in Bossier City. I park close to where the buses are and hope that maybe I'll see him walking to or from a bus. No such luck. I tweet him a few times about what I need to do to deliver and I get no response. So after an hour or so, I go into the venue where the volunteers were supposed to meet and ask a woman at the desk if I'm allowed to bring food into the venue. She says NO ABSOLUTELY NO OUTSIDE FOOD, unless I'm with one of the artists. Well, I tell her it's a delivery for one of the artists, but she says he'll have to come out to get it and she has no way of contacting him. BRICK WALL... GAH
So, I go back outside and decide that I'll just have to improvise and hopefully get it to him at the meet and greet at intermission. But I don't want to just leave it in the car like it is. What if the meat goes bad? What if I inadvertantly give Jason ptomaine poisining? What if ...? So I get back in my car and drive to the nearest convenience store and buy a styrofoam ice chest and a bag of ice and a roll of aluminum foil. I carefully wrap each sandwich, store it all in the ice chest and drive back. During all this time, the JamNation line has grown from just a few people to a few hundred (maybe a thousand?) people and I find myself way at the back. The line moves pretty quickly once it starts moving at all and pretty soon I'm in the venue and the wait for intermission begins.
First thing, tho, I have to tell you about the Q & A. Jason got most of the questions One girl asked him if he was single... He, of course, told her he has been happily married for three years and has a daughter. There was a sustained loud groan from the audience and I thought a couple of girls close to me were going to burst out crying. Ah! How well I remember the gnashing of teeth when Ringo got married... but I digress...
Okay, intermission, and the plot thickens. I met Jason's "handler" Richie (who kinda looks like a mini-Michael) for the meet and greet (the group he took out was just me and a couple of GUYS) and he led us through backstage and outside right near the loading dock. I guess since it wasn't exactly cold, they decided to do it outside. Not really cold, but quite windy and it did get chilly. Well, there were already several people out there and most of them at that time were talking to the OBB guys. I spotted Jason and went right to him. He gave me a big hug and I said right off the bat "I brought your sandwiches, Jason" His eyes got really big and he grinned and said "Where are they?" "They're in my car and it's parked in the parking lot not too far from where the buses are," Jason said "I'm starving. The dinner they provided tonight wasn't very good. I think we can go get them now" I said, "NOW?" and he said, "Well, right after this meet and greet is over." So after about 15 minutes and a bunch of pics and autographs, they hustled all the other people back in and Jason and I started walking toward the gate. Richie called after us and wanted to know where we were going and Jason said "Becky brought us those sandwiches I've been telling you about. We're going to get them and put them in the bus." Richie told him "Okay, but you only have 15 minutes" Jason decided to try the gate to see if it might be open so he wouldn't have to go get his ALL ACCESS tag to go out and get back in, but the gate was locked. So we headed in the building and went to his dressing room so he could get the tag. I said, "But Jason, why would YOU of all people need identification. Don't they know you by your dreads?" He said the people that work there don't have any idea who the artists are and earlier he got stopped coming in and if he hadn't been with Richie who had his All Access with him, he would have been denied entry.
So Jason goes into his dressing room to get his ID and while I'm standing in the hall waiting, one of the OBB guys walks past and asks me if I'm related to Jason. I said no I'm not and he said "Oh, I thought you might be his Mom." Haha... So when Jason comes out I tell him about what he said and I also tell him about the time I was mistaken for Michael's mom. Jason looks at me and says, "Well, there is a resemblance"
So, we get to my car and I get the sandwiches out of the car and Jason is in heaven. He's trying to decide if he needs to microwave them and he's kinda anxious that that might spoil them, but he wants them hot. Anyway, I tell him that the sandwiches are free, but there is a delivery fee. I need another hug. And he gives me a really great Jason hug, and then says "Do you have all the T-shirst already, because if you don't, just come by the merch table after the show, and pick out what you want."
Well, there was this one shirt that Winnie and Brenda got last week that I passed on but wished later that I had got, so I told him I would like that and he said "Come and get it. I'll tell Richie to pull one out for you."
As we were walking back into the building, I said "I was kinda hoping Mandy and Madeline might be here tonight." and he says "I wanted them to come, but tonight was the night Madeline had to get some shots she missed because she was sick. The appointment was for 7:00. Who ever heard?"
So we get back in the building and Richie is waiting to take me back to the audience and Jason walks with us to just backstage and then tells Richie he's going to go put the sandwiches in the fridge on the bus. Then he gives me another big hug and says "This is just the BEST. I can't wait." I go back out and watch the last song or two from Matthew West and then they take up the offering while Jason sings Hallelujah... sublime...
When the show's over I head up to Jason's merch table where he's signing autographs and I just stand and watch the reaction of the young girls as they leave the table. Positively GIDDY! When the crowd thins out, Jason asks Richie to go find me a shirt and we do locate one my size. By this time, Jason and Richie are getting ready to go to the bus. Jason gives me another hug and I say, "I hope the sandwiches are good" and he says "Oh, we already ate them. They were great."... AND HE GIVES ME ANOTHER HUG and tells me to drive carefully. I kinda float to the car and the drive home was effortless. But when I got here I was wiped out and there was no way I could tell you guys ALL THIS and still get to bed in time to get up today and go to work (Yeah I had to work today... that's what I get for taking yesterday off... BUT IT WAS SO WORTH IT)
Would I do it again? You bet your sweet bippy! As a matter of fact, there is that concert in Dallas on April 6. I wonder how many BILs he needs for that.......
